Rating: 7 out of 7.

Before I begin, I want to let you know that there will be NO SPOILERS in my review—just my thoughts without revealing any crucial details about the series. ‘The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call’ is a medical K-drama based mainly in Seoul that shows the lives of dedicated doctors, nurses, and paramedics as they navigate the challenges of emergency medicine and the system to save lives. The story focuses on Dr Baek Kang-hyuk, played by Ju Ji-hoon, who comes back to Seoul after spending time away riding motorcycles through war zones and doing combat medicine to establish a trauma centre in Seoul. As he comes face to face with what he has to do at the hospital, he meets Dr Yang Jae-won, played by Choo Young-woo, and nurse Cheon Jang-mi, played by Ha Young. Each episode has a new medical case that pushes the team’s limits and tests their skills, resilience, and trust in one another, which leaves the viewers rooting for them.

One of the things that makes this series stand out from the rest is the blend of medical K-drama with numerous moments of humour that bring a contrast to the medical scenes that take place. Throughout the episodes, I found myself whispering to myself, ‘Run Forrest Run,’ a phrase that will make sense once you see the series, I promise. The series knows how to deliver a balance between the jokes and witty banter and the seriousness of the scene. I must say that the series is incredible when it comes to showing the surgeries and medical emergencies, which is why there were times I had to close my eyes as the realism was overwhelming, and yet I couldn’t wait to see more. The cinematography captures perfectly the frenetic energy in the series and that of the emergency room, immersing us in the urgency and the chaos of each situation.

The main characters are not just brave and skilled but also human with their own fears and worries. The duo Dr Yang Jae-won and Dr Baek Kang-Hyuk is absolutely incredible. They bicker like siblings and have a mentor-student vibe while taking care of each other like family. I have to say that their dynamic is something that I did not expect. Some of the scenes, although set in a serious establishment, were incredibly funny, allowing viewers to see that behind the professionals they are also humans who, like us, have a laugh from time to time. I won’t say too much, but keep an eye out for the nicknames! The series brings a mixture like yin and yang in the form of Dr Yang Jae-won and Dr Baek Kang-Hyuk, as although they seem like total opposites, they do have one thing in common: the drive and passion for medicine and saving lives. The show also addresses critical issues within the healthcare system, adding depth to the storyline.

‘The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call’ is worth binge-watching as although at times you wonder if the scenes could really be possible, it also makes you want more. It’s a series that entertains, moves, and inspires viewers, making it a must-see. So whether you’re a fan of medical dramas, K-drama, or just looking for something to watch, ‘The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call’ is the one to watch. So grab some popcorn and get ready to binge-watch as the episodes will end in a flash.
