Why do women have to continuously prove they can do what men can? Whether in business, sports or everyday activities, women have to overcome obstacles especially in male dominated spaces. Netflix newest series ‘Running Point’ showcases the struggles women face daily while highlighting how women can break through barriers and achieve greatness.
‘Running Point’ is a new TV series that tells the story of Isla, an ambitious and overlooked woman in a male-dominated world, especially by her brothers. The story follows Isla as she is appointed the president of the Los Angeles Waves, and she must prove to herself and everyone around her that she is the right person for the job. The series is inspired by Jeanie Buss’s real-life journey, where she had to prove herself in a male-dominated sports industry. I won’t go into more details as the story is more complex and you need to watch it.

While ‘Running Point’ is a comedy, it touches on important aspects that deserve attention. Don’t get me wrong the comedy is there and you will laugh and enjoy the series as there are many moments that will make you laugh. However, there are also important themes that it addresses with the help of comedy, allowing the narrative to be both fun and thought-provoking. ‘Running Point’ is breaking barriers by showing that women are powerful, strong, and able to hold positions of power through an emotional and exhilarating way.
All the characters within ‘Running Point’ have their own story and their own character development, but what makes them stand apart is that they are not perfect they are relatable, flawed, and complex. The cast brings depth to their roles as each character’s struggles and triumphs feel relatable in one way or another. While the cast is incredible, let’s get back to what stood out to me.

At its core, ‘Running Point’ is about breaking stereotypes and fighting against societal expectations. It highlights the numerous setbacks and challenges women faced simply because of their gender. The bond between Isla Gordon (played by Kate Hudson) and Ali Lee (played by Brenda Song) is powerful as they are not only friends but also work together. What makes it even more powerful? In a world that often pits women against each other ‘Running Point’ flips the narrative through their characters, as instead of rivalry, we see sisterhood. Whether it’s through advice, emotional support, or simply showing up for one another in difficult and important times, the relationship between Isla and Ali shows a powerful reminder that women can be each other’s biggest allies. The way Isla and Ali are there to support one another and lift each other in times of doubt and failure makes you find yourself cheering for their success.

I have to admit I was sold on this new series the moment I saw the clip where Brenda Song’s character tells Kate Hudson’s character, ‘Also, you can’t ‘fail’. She continues ‘You know its when a guy gets a big job he can ‘fail’ a bunch, and it’s them getting their sea legs? But women have to be perfect right off the bat.’ It perfectly describes the reality we still live in where women have to be perfect all the time while men can afford to make mistakes and it’s not a big deal. This show its incredible on how it tackles such complex themes all while making it fun and engaging. I absolutely loved it!
Throughout the series, you’ll find yourself not only cheering for Isla’s success but also resenting the harsh reality she faces, as it’s one that still exists in today’s world. Don’t get me wrong, ‘Running Point’ is not just about women supporting women it’s also about the inspiration to keep pushing through and trusting yourself that you can do this no matter the setbacks or what anyone says. The show is a reminder that it’s okay to fall as long as you pick yourself back up again.
If you are looking for a series that celebrates strong, powerful women overcoming obstacles with grit and grace, then ‘Running Point’ is for you. And if you’re a fan of basketball and comedy, or both, this is also for you!
